Depending on the gun, but if the markings are "cut" into the metal/plastic and the surrounding areas are a smooth finish, use white crayon to fill in the markings (go at 90deg to each and every line, fill them all in) and then just rub with your finger til the surrounding areas rub off. If it's something like an MP5 with a fine pebbly finish around the markings, pretty much screwed unless you go the paint route.
