More specifically the gas rig is typically a paintball gun cylinder, either CO2 or HPA, and the hose goes into the pistol grip on the Escort versions. Other "classic" airsoft guns have various other methods of attaching the rig and firing the BB, but none are like the Escort system which is modernized and in current production. A lot of people dislike the idea of using an external rig but I always ask them, do you use a sling? If so what's the difference?
If hard-kicking recoil and a loud muzzle report mean using external gas, that sounds like an acceptable compromise to me!
