Spring should be placed so that it presses the flat side of the latch against the bevel gear.

When you have it apart, press each side of the piston groove into the rail of the matching mechbox side and move it front and back. See if it goes easily or if it binds up. I had to deal with a siezing V2 mechbox (Hurricane) that I installed a Guarder piston in and found the grooves to be slightly tighter on the grooves than normal, so I used a chisel to shave plastic from the insides of the grooves. Worked perfectly after that.
