I always load red 0.12g as the first dozen rounds into my MP5 mags, then fill with (used to be 0.25g) 0.28g BBs. When I get near the end of the mag, the sound of the gun changes and you visually see the 0.12g colour and the fact they overhop so I can change my mag before I get to dry firing.

Pour your BBs into a bowl and look for any bad ones. In my opinion, using reasonable quality 0.12g BBs once in a while is better than dry firing an AEG, or even going 10,000rds without any type of maintainance. The only thing you'd screw up using bad 0.12g is your hop up rubber or even plug your barrel, but not doing any maintainance but using good ammo will do the same.
