It's an AFB (Alternative Force Block) that allows an additional point of control against your target.
Not only does it prevent the target from disabling your gun as scooby mentioned, it also allows you to press it up against the target while maintaining muzzle control on him.
And yeah, I suppose you could punch him in the face with the muzzle, "just cuz you can."
