Baa!! Open cell foam is much easier, and works better too.
The venting of the barrel did 95% of the job, just like the muffelr in your car does it. Takes high pressure gass to lower pressure over a larger area. The foam would have stopped any hissing sounds, but it sucks otherwise.
And I have tried it in an ICS silencer. You need to increase surface area to the expanding gas. Open cell foam does this, just like the baffles in an anechoic sound chamber, where there is zero reflected sound. Closed cells offer no increase in surface area, that's why it doesn't work and science is on my side here.
