Ive owned 3 AK's and on two of them I installed the sideplates. One was from a Belarus supplier and the other was a KingArms mount. Ive done this 4 times, twice in plastic and twice in metal, every time is pretty much the same thing. All i used was a drill, I just lined up the mount on where i wanted it (with the sidemount and scope attached) to get the right angle and distance I wanted from the top dust cover. Then i simply used a pencil, marked the 3 holes. Then i took the screws and tapped them lightly onto the surface with a hammer, as a guide for drilling. Make sure you use a drill bit SMALLER then the screws, once the holes are made, just line it up and the screws will self-tap into the bored hole, making its own threads. Ive had it only my guns for years now with no problems. If youre really anal about it, you can apply a good amount of JB weld to the flat contact surface and locktite to the screws, then JB weld the sideplate holes so the screw stay in place, sand it, then paint it. Hope this helps.
