They actually do relate to each other, but not in the way that people expect it to. Hard to explain, but they are closely related. If you consider a 280fps gun vs. a 400fps gun, with same ammo and hop up set for that ammo/wind conditions, the higher fps gun will out range the other. Of course, the exact way they relate is effective range vs. maximum range. Lower fps guns get reach the "floating" part of the trajectory earlier, where the hop up is largely carrying the BB. Higher fps guns will give more thrust which carries the BB farther before reaching that 'floating' state.
