This one speaks the truth. My local field owner has been playing with a ~320 fps gun all year (rather than his near-400 ones) just to illustrate a point to the new players that you DON'T need to upgrade the guns.
There's also the problem of how you plan to upgrade, have you ever opened a mechbox? Have you even managed to take a mechbox out of the Armalite that you want? My guess is no, and you probably shouldn't do it until you know how to, by slowly taking it apart and reassembling it over a few weeks/months that you already own it for.
Play a few games with it stock, then judge for yourself if you REALLY need more fps.
Lastly, upgrading the spring means more than just a $20 spring. It also means a new spring guide, new bushings and probably new shims as a result of the new bushings.
