I am just starting out this hobby, and want to get my equipment right the first time. I don't want to waste time and money on junk that I will discard later.
May I ask: just what equipment is actually used in an airsoft match?
1) Laser pointers?
2) flashlights?
3) scopes?
I'm thinking with the short range of airsoft, and the way lasers and flashlights give you away, that much of this equipment are just dressing right? Or am I wrong? How is this equipment used in a match?
Thanks!!

It really depends on what kind of impression you are trying to re-create. That is, if you are going to be going the MILSIM route. If you just wanna play, just grab what looks cool and suits your playing style.
The best thing to do, IMO, is to play with your AEG stock for a while. Get used to the irons and develop your skills. After that, look into an M68 Close Combat Optic, or Aimpoint. G&P makes a cheap one. Or check out
www.1337tactical.com. And unless you are gunna go down the snipxxor path, you don't really need a scope with magnification. Especially if your AEG is stock.
If you are going to be playing indoors pick up a Surefire. It's good that you wanna do it right the first time. I just picked stuff up without researching when I first started. I regret it now. I am trying to complete an impression, but I have to re-buy certain things, because I didn't know better.
As for lasers, not all fields allow them so check before you go splurge on one. You might want to check out an AN/PEQ5 Carbine Visual Laser (CVL), made by G&G, if you want a nice one.
But again, those are all things I would buy. Find out what you like, research pictures and ask around. Then go and complete your loadout.
