The first thing I'd be looking at is the wire solder points. I've seen poor quality soldering jobs spontaneously break in the cold.

Doubt it's the lube, unless it turned entirely solid in the cold (did you use some water-based sex toy lube? :P ) and even then you would have heard the motor straining and most likely just outright blown your fuse if kept your finger on the trigger for a few seconds under those conditions.

And actually, did you check the fuse, too?
