The same solution (Ed's Red) you use for firearms works great for the barrel and cylinder but will eat plastic. It's combination of kerosene and transmission fluid.

It tends to peel off painted surfaces (i.e. sights etc)
Scarecrow has one, can't remember if he puts his composite guns in there or not...
Sure gets em clean tho....like factory new.
