Only the bottom panel of the RIS will come off - the other three are a single piece. If you want to mount it on the side, though, you just gotta poke the wires through one of the many holes along the handguard.
Find somebody local where you live who has one or go to a game and ask if you can manhandle one for a bit. It's a lot easier to figure things out with it in your hand rather than trying to have it explained with just words.
srsly though, go with the crane battery stock :P
