Hate to say it, but he's somewhat right- they have a devastating psychological effect if you don't know what they are, if something comes hurdling through the door and there's a possibility of some sort of grenade (example, Tornado) you're going to duck and cover, or get the fuck away from it- effectively making it a distraction device.
