This is what I'm trying to warn you about:

Cutting the spring doesn't just pose the threat of wrecking your spring, it could trash the piston, gears, piston head, cylinder, and tappet plate.

Any number of factors could cause the piston to wobble while firing, putting unnecessary stress on the other parts in contact with it.
