I either have or have had most of the guns that are being discussed. I didn't read the entire thread that thoroughy, but I think you may have missed the M2 gas carbine, which is an absolute hoot.
The 8mm gas garand is a great replica but it has a small clip that pops out when you are finished firing that would be easy to loose which makes it iffy for fielding. You can also get a kit to convert an M14 into a Garand from a number of different sources.
The M3A1 Grease Gun is also a lot of fun. The weight is strange and it shakes like an epileptic, but that is just realism. With the upgraded spring and inner barrel it is not half bad. Just don't expect long range accuracy.
The Thompson tends to be the AS workhorse for WWII allied guns.
