The material used.

M120 springs are tempered through oil quenching in order to harden it and help it a bit with oxidation prevention.

M120S, on the other hand, are produced from stainless steel strands. Naturally harder and already carrying anti-oxidation properties, these springs are actually recommended more for users who shoot more in full auto. The ability of the material to retain its original formed elasticity and tension makes it great for heavy AEG users.

In that regard, the M120 spring is recommended by Systema more for plinkers and target shooters, whereas the M120S is recommended more for skirmishers.

The different properties of the material create the variance in velocities.
