"Technically" speaking it's not just the tx power level that makes a radio illegal to own/operate. Though by the way Stryak, for general land-mobile use, 5W or more or less...it entirely depends upon authorized (via licence or certification) parameters, is perfectly fine. Therefore, a blanket 5W is illegal statement is not necessarily correct. FYI, for GMRS the max license-exempt transmitter power is 2W for Canada, obviously making all 4W+ UHF radios illegal to use on GMRS, but that's not really my point or my problem.

As for the GP-68 and pretty much all other Asia imports, the whole damn radio is illegal for use here in Canada because it's not certified against Industry Canada's RSS-119, but don't let that little tid-bit stop you. If CBSA bothers to notice the DOC/IC approval number is missing and bothers to seize it, well...you were warned!

...So to make a long story short, don't worry about it. I've never heard of anyone in Canada being jacked up for running overpowered radios.
Umm Mad, the CRTC has nothing to do with 2-way radio. It's Industry Canada, and there have been people cited in the past for over-powered operation, but that's usually been a charge in addition to operating un-licensed and in some cases causing deliberate interference with licensed users, an act which definitely attracts attention and one that Industry Canada takes a very dim view of naturally.

Realistically however, the GP-68 radio will probably get through as CBSA surveillance of un-certified radios is not exactly intense compared with the other items found in this hobby.

Cheers!

PS: For detailed instructions, look up Mot AP-73 (Ham version of the GP-68) operator's manual as there's no programming cable...everything's from the front panel. Too bad he's not selling the hi-cap battery with it.
