A paintball is not likely to ever be embedded in you, but an airsoft be BB sure can, I've seen it, and at far less than 500 fps with 0.20g.

Some rifles are capable of 600+ fps with 0.36g BBs, and not all fields regulate velocity uniformly either.

And, I hate snipers.
