I fold my patch in three, thread it through the patch holder, twist it in the direction the threads on the rods tighten, then twist it into the barrel all the way down, then twist it back up. Maybe every dozen cleanings I'll use silicon oil on the patch, just as a solvent, but most of the time I just dry swab.
