Overcharged battery characteristics

Hello all, Brett here with another question yet again .
Is there any way to tell if a battery is/was overcharged? I mean when I charge the battery, it gets mildly warm and the light shuts off (it worked fine with my other battery), but i'm still wondering if it's overcharged. Are there any characteristics of overcharged batterys or can i use a voltage meter to test it? I'm looking into investing into a smart charger (i have one already that was given to me but it charges at 4.5 amps [too much], and i'm trying to figure out whether or not the one my question is about is smart or not).
I used this charger with my RC 7.2 5,000 mah battery and it always shut off at the right time no matter how much charge was already in the battery, i'm just wondering if it can handle charging a 10.8v.
I'm sorry if this is confusing, i worded it the best i could.
Thanks again.
-Brett
