Yup, you can. A Bad shimming job can do much more damage than just strip gears. Actually, you are pretty lucky all that was destroyed was your gears. Could have melted wiring and possibly shorted battery as well.

I hate to say this but this is definitely a shimming problem, drink Redbull and try again =). If you have any doubts, shim looser than tighter(But not too loose).
