The screech was probably the sound of stripping the teeth of the motor pinion gear or the bevel gear, OR that the motor height was too high.

The motor polarity should be marked with a red or black marker beside the tabs where the black and red wire are connected.

The air nozzle being in the forward position is not a problem, this is the position of the nozzle when the spring is uncompressed. It will move back when the sector gear moves.

What is the problem exactly? Is your gun shooting?
