Usually when that's done they'll either select prime production examples or the weapons from the ordnance trials.

In 2009 the G3 was still part of the active inventory for some units.
Also keep in mind that the first units did not get their G28s until 2012 (more vanilla units had to probably wait much longer), so the G3A3 ZF/DMR was still used up to at least 2012+ by most units.
