Choice for first airsoft rifle.

Total noobie here. Looking to get a airsoft rifle for recreational use. Not any type of competative play, but target shooting.

As far as I can tell this website is just discussion oriented, and not actually selling anything, so I feel free to ask which gun you'd reccomend here, if any:

How expensive is green gas? Is that the way to go for airsoft? Is there any other ongoing expenses besides ammo?

For starters, get AEG. I recommend King Arms M4A1.
BTW, this site has a classified section where people sell their guns and sponsors too.

Is that a good choice? How does electric compare to gas? How accurate would a gun like this be? Do the batteries hold up well? Any ongoing costs besides ammo?

If you only plan on using it for target practice, you would be much better off with a pellet gun or airgun. They are much more accurate than airsoft guns. Cheaper too.

If you insist on airsoft guns, everyone will recommend you get Age Verified on the forums. Please check the FAQ section for AV info. Basically you find your nearest representative, meet with him/her and provide ID to prove you're above 18 years of age. Then you'll have access to the 'shop' section of the forums (Retailers, and classifieds where members sell their guns) to make your choice.

AEGs (automatic electric guns) are much more reliable than gas rifles. Gas guns generally require regular lubing and maintenance to prevent leaks and breaks.
Added costs on AEGs are a good battery and charger. Batteries come in different voltages and capacities. Higher voltage generally means higher rate of fire, higher capacity means more shots per charge. Usually a 9.6v 2000mAh battery would work well. A charger would be an additional 50 bucks or so. A good charger that charges your battery and shuts off when its done. Using cheap wall chargers will only do bad things to your battery.

Budget is about $300 WITH shipping and tax.

There's more then one... Albeit most are iffy and IMO not worth mentioning, but that's personal preference.

300 is probably the bare minimum that you want to spend... There's a few under that I would recommend, but technically you have to prove that you are 18 or older by becoming age veriified like the guys have mentioned. If you have strong google fu, you can find the guns I would recommend.

Don't try ordering from the states, unless you know the exact procedure, customs tends to seize them and you'll be out 300 bucks.

btw, at 300$ you'll have your work cut out for you.. that's right about the line that crap starts turning into decent, so you will need to do some good research to find out which are the good ones.

I believe we can tell you what brands are good, but we can't tell you where to get them.
