Open top mag pouches with bungee cord vs Closed mag pouches

Hey guys.

I have always used closed mag pouches, but I am now considering open top with the bungee cord.
For example:

I was wondering how often (if at all) does the bungee cord snag on brush or other random objects throughout your travels on the field?
I usually play in basically a giant wall of green for a field. Many trees and etc..
I don't go prone all that much and if I do, I am not crawling around frequently.

Thanks!

I only ever use shingle pouches, I'll never go back to top flap ones again.

Mine never get snagged on anything, however certain mag types (ie AUG, AK) that have any sort of lip on them can be a bit of a pain. I have an m4 so it's not an issue for me.

the only problem that I get from them is that they allow dirt to get into the pouches, so I have to clean my mags very frequently.

If you arent going to be crawling around in the dirt then the open top are good, the bungee annoys me though and when I have used the open top I usually cut the bungee off. Right now I just use the close top, and when I want easier access to the mags I just tuck the top flap behind the mags and the mag retention is still good so no worries about mags falling out and the mags are easily accesible to get at.

IMO the only benefit to the shingles is if you want to have real estate on your vests still, since you can continue to add pouches on top of the MOLLE/PALs on the shingle pouches.

On my ciras layout I've got two shingles stacked with the bungie cord and I've found it doesn't get in the way and it's a lot better to take an extra half second to reload the to spend 20 minutes or more trying to find a mag or be out $20 to $100 for a lost mag. I have to admit though if hlyou properly weave the Molle straps the mags are pretty snug in there.

Bottom line the bush wouldn't be a problem even if you're prone.

I always prefer closed top mag pouches. There are times when it might be good to have your mags covered by the pouch flap. If you want quick access to your mags like in an open top/bungee pouch all you need to do is open the flap and tuck it behind your mags so the flap is out of the way.

I hope this suggestion helps.

I like both and my bungees have never been snagged on brush before.
But if you are concerned, Emdom now makes an open top with no bungee, that remains secure.

I use both shingles and covered mag pouches.

the thing I noticed with the shingles is that the bungee cord, if the mag has some curve to it, like an AK, aug, or PDW mag that the bungee will sometimes slip off due to the slope of the mag, I'd keep shingle pouches in front of you thats what I do, and use the covered's for my sides and backside, just keep the shingles up front so you can see what their doing and hopefully prevent the bungee from coming off it does and loosing a mag (which really sucks if its a gbbr mag)

Thanks for the info gents, much appreciate.

Going to go with the more secure route of closed mag pouches.
If need be I can just tuck the flap behind as mentioned above.

Man... just come on over. I have 7.62 pouches that close and 7.62 pouches that have bungee cords. You KNOW this! You can wriggle around in the dirt behind my house and find out for yourself
