Anodizing Epic Fail
So, I sent out my G&G SR25 receiver to be anodized, since paint just wasn't doing the trick. I finally get a response from them today after running the receiver last week:
Unfortunately we ran the two parts last week and they disintegrated in the process. This was probably due to the material. We ran them with many other aluminum parts and they were the only two pieces that didn’t come out properly. I’m very sorry that this happened. We have the remains of the parts here if you would like to see them. So... I just spent $35 to have my priceless SR25 receiver disintegrated... WTF! Words cannot express my anger. INCONCEIVABLE.

Did you inform the anodizer that
your metal item was magnesium and not aluminum, so they could chose the right process for you? http://www.finishing.com/faqs/magnesium.html Sorry to hear your parts are toast. PS: There's another GR25, just popped up in the for sale area

Yes, fully informed that it was a Magnesium alloy, not aluminum. He said, they ran it with the aluminum parts.

Yep, if you made them aware of the material, they are liable for damaging it through an improper finishing method, if they can't/won't do magnesium they shouldn't have taken your contract.

When I was at the machine shop here at work they told me alloys won't annodize properly with their methods as they would most likely just disentigrate in the process. You'd think anybody that would run a shop like that would have any idea of the consequences of attempting to anno a casting made of alloy using their available method.

Get your $$ back + compensation. THEY ruined it, not you.
Zero excuses. It would be the same as a garage telling you 'oh sorry our lift came down on your car, tough luck'. Thats what their insurance is there for. |
