The physical size of the LED doesn't matter. What you're looking for is a high luminescence rating, ie how bright it is. You can get tiny surface mount LEDs that are just as bright as 3mm or 5mm LEDs.
Having said that, it hasn't crossed my mind to replace the LED in my replica. Oh well, I just ordered a Bushnell micro red dot sight. They're only about $100 and are the real deal. Hopefully it performs well. |

It actually does matter in first point, as the LED is insert in a tight hole holding it in place, a 5mm LED would be bigger than the piece with the 3mm bore actually...

I think you misunderstood me. I was saying that you can use LEDs that are smaller than the 3mm ones but are just as bright (and even as bright as 5mm LEDs). I wasn't implying that 5mm LEDs would fit.

Just got these last week. Upgrade is noticeable, but not as much I though it would in daylight. Best bet is to use a higher priced Eotech clone, or the original Holosight.

Damn. thats a little bit disappointing lol.
Did you have to solder the LED? |

Of course, and these curcuit boards have so tiny wires, it was kind of a pain to do with a non adjustable solder iron...
